Let me admit straightaway that I have yet to step into the Art Gallery of Alberta. Maybe it’s because I feel so gratified just looking at the exterior. Well, the truth is that I’m just not really very artistic and while I am often moved by art, I am not constantly drawn to it. I suppose I’ll visit the Art Gallery this year, but for now I have discovered that its exterior is a goldmine of wonderful photographs.
One of the first things I noticed about the exterior is the complete lack of color – this building pleads to be photographed for black and white. I also find it to be much more interesting closer up than from across the street. I just get lost when the crazy curvaceousness fills my vision. This is where a longer focal length really works to fill the frame, resulting in that Guggenheim-esque waviness. The combination of the unpolished metal cladding and an overcast sky results in a very muted tonal scale, something I’m very much into lately with my black & whites. Anyway, blah, blah, blah, just look at a few images here.
